About the scholarship

This scholarship is available to Colorado high school seniors or College students who are enrolled in an accredited university or 4-year college in Colorado, pursuing a major in liberal arts or natural sciences, and are engaged in violin, viola, cello, or bass at the institution.

Scholarship amount: $10,000
Number of awards: 2

Scholarship awards are one-time awards. The amount awarded to a selected recipient may be used for the cost of attendance. All scholarships will be paid directly to the recipient’s school and must be used for the upcoming academic year. Award disbursement is contingent upon the outside scholarship policies of a recipient’s college or university.

Eligibility

  • Attend/attended a high school in Colorado
  • Be a high school senior or college student
  • Have a GPA of 3.75 or above
  • Be enrolled in an accredited university or 4-year college located in Colorado
  • Pursue a major in one or more liberal arts (including music or fine arts) or the natural sciences
  • Register for/engage in individual lessons in violin, viola, cello, or bass at the institution
  • Register for and perform in at least one student or professional ensemble

About Janet M. Blackburn

Janet M. Blackburn established the Janet M. Blackburn Scholarship Fund through her estate to support undergraduate musicians in Colorado. The scholarship fund emphasizes merit, rewarding students who pair academic excellence with dedication to music, through study, practice, and performance. By investing in the next generation of musicians and scholars, the fund advances the purpose Janet set forth: to encourage and promote music study and performance at the collegiate level. 

The 2026 scholarship application cycle is opened from January 15 to March 15.
